5 star hotel Cape Town luxury hotel South Africa luxury suites
The St James Manor is a five star stately seaside retreat overlooking the trendy and vibrant fishing village of Kalk Bay with majestic views across False Bay and the Indian Ocean.

St James, historically known as „millionaire‘s mile“ is making its comeback as one of the trendiest places to stay in Cape Town. The area still boasts the traditional colourful Victorian bathing boxes and grand old houses. Fresh fish can be brought from the local fishermen and the harbour itself offers excellent seafood restaurants from rustic local cuisine to fine dining experiences. Mediterranean in style, the main road is a hive of novel antique shops, deli‘s, boutiques and art galleries a mere three minutes walk from the St James Manor. In front of St James Manor, across the road, you will find the famous tidal pools and swimming beaches. A favourite pastime is the early morning swim in the wind protected, warm waters of St James.

Rooms

VANCOUVER SUITE – CLASSIC 70m2
The Manor was originally part of a large property called ‘The Mearns’, granted to Philip Morgenrood in April 1880. He subdivided the erf and in 1883 sold a portion measuring 1 morgen 14 square roods and 28 square feet to William Torbet. This erf (including a thatched house) was extensive, running from Main Rd up the full length of Hillrise Rd to Boyes Drive. Torbet divided this erf into eight lots in addition to the main erf and sold the entire property to George Findlay in 1885. Findlay named the house Vancouver in memory of his stay in Vancouver, Canada, and lived there for 10 years. He sold the entire property to to Joseph Mossop in 1895.

GENTRY SUITE – DELUXE 60m2
Captain Gentry was born in 1874 in England and died in 1938 in St James. Known as the ‘doyen of hotel proprietors’, he came to South Africa in 1908 and bought the Seahurst Hotel in St James from Jessie Miller. In 1915 he joined the St James Hotel, which he took ownership of in 1925 for £20 000, and sold the Seahurst. His friendly ways and extrovert mannerisms made him a favourite with the locals and the overseas visitors. He served on the Kalk Bay-Muizenberg Municipality as a Councillor from 1911 dealing with Leisure and Entertainment and was a City Councillor from 1913 until 1933 working on the Improvements and Parks Committee.

BOYES SUITE – DELUXE 60m2
George Boyes, born 1863 in Cape Town, joined the Civil Service as a clerk in 1883. In 1892 he was appointed Chief Commissioner and Resident Magistrate of Mafikeng. In 1904 he became Resident Magistrate, Collector of Customs and Port Captain at Simon’s Town, the Royal Navy’s main base in the southern hemisphere. It was here he developed his interest in the South Peninsula and its road network. He extended the road from Miller’s Point to Smitswinkel Bay, the old Red Hill Rd to Klaasjagersberg, and the high-level road from Muizenberg to Kalk Bay, named ‘Boyes Drive’ in his honour. This was his finest contribution to the ‘All Round the Cape Peninsula Road Project’. In 1916 he left for Queenstown, returned in 1919 as Chief Magistrate until his retirement in 1923 and became a City Councillor, but suddenly took ill in 1924 and passed away at home.

WATERSON SUITE – SUPERIOR DOUBLE 40m2
The Hon. Sidney Waterson, born 1896 in England, came to South Africa and served with the South African Forces in World War I. He became a Member of Parliament for the South Peninsula in 1929, was High Commissioner for the London Union from 1938, and was a Member of Parliament for Claremont from 1943 to 1953 and for Constantia until 1970. In 1935, he bought a home on the corner of Moselle Rd and Westray Steps in St James. He married Hilda – known as ‘Betty’ – in 1924. She was a nurse with the Anglo-French Red Cross and helped establish the First RC Voluntary Aid Detachment No.122 in 1936. At the outbreak of war in 1939 she was active in the South Peninsula and founded the SA Voluntary Service to the Armed Forces and to channel gifts from SA to Britain. In later years they moved to Kenilworth, where Waterson died aged 80 and Betty four years later.

RUDD – STANDARD TWIN 30m2
CHILDREN’S TWIN // Henry Rudd, born 1868 in Cape Town, was the son of Charles Rudd who was friends and partners with Cecil John Rhodes from 1872, working diamonds in Kimberley, and so on. Between 1873 and 1881, Rhodes intermittently attended college in England while Charles managed their interests. By 1880 they’d become wealthy men and, with others, formed De Beers. Henry Rudd joined the board as a Director in 1902. He married Mabel Blythe in 1893 then moved to St James in 1929 having purchased ‘Blencathra’ (40 Main Rd) and ‘Rocklands’ (38 Main Rd). In 1933, he was remarried to Emilie Poole of France – the former companion to Mabel. It was under his ownership, until his death in 1963, that both homes received a serious overhaul.
